Orange Peel Quilt complete! (#98)

My 98th quilt is complete!

First of all, did everyone notice that number?  98!  Only two more until my 100th quilt finish.  I haven’t started that quilt yet, but it will probably be the next one I start, but its going to be a quilt that I have wanted to make in a very long time, so I’m excited!!!!

Ok, about this quilt.  There are those times when a friend tells you some good news, and you think, “That deserves a quilt.”  When my friend told me that a birth mother had chosen their family to adopt her baby, that was my first thought.  The baby hasn’t been born yet, bu she is due within the next few weeks.  My friend showed me this bedding about a month ago, and I knew that I needed to make a quilt with these colors in the orange peel design.

I have seen these orange peel quilts around, and I knew I wanted to make one.  In fact, I’m in the process of making hand appliqued orange peel quilts for my girls, but I wanted to try a different method with this one.  So, I found this technique, and instead of interfacing, I used light colored and lightweight scraps.  After making the orange peel appliques, I used a blanket stitch to attach them.  To reduce the bulk of the quilt, I removed the bacground fabric behind the applique pieces.  This made the quilt a lot lighter, and probably a lot easier to quilt.

The quilting was inspired by a design in the “Quilting Modern” book by Jacquie Gering and Katie Pederson.  I don’t know who did the quilting, but design was quilted on their “Lilac Crush” quilt.  It is a flower design, and it was very easy to do on my home machine.

I had to incorporate a red pin dot in this quilt somehow, and I couldn’t resist using it as the backing fabric.  And I needed to use the red version of it as a binding.

The quilt was given to my friend yesterday.  It was a fun and pretty easy quilt to make.  I might do another one in the future.  It was 41 inches by 51 inches before washing,  I forgot to measure it after washing, but it is probably about 38 x 48.

And, just to give you fair warning, I’m thinking I should probably do a giveaway with my 100th quilt.  What say ye?  😉

Yes, the orange peels are appliqué. It was such a fun quilt to make. I made the appliqué pieces so they would fit into a 5 inch square, then I cut out 10.5 inch squares of background fabric. I pressed lines in from corner to opposite corner, pressing an “X” into each white block, and I aligned 4 orange peels along that “X” line and used a blanket stitch to stitch them down. I also shared a link of a tutorial I used to make the orange peels. 🙂
