Way back in June, I finished a christmas quilt using a block that I designed (paper piecing pattern and tutorial here). This quilt was a lot of work, and I love the end result. I called the block “homeward bound” because it looks as if all the geese are flying into home base, but apparently there is another “homeward bound” block, so I don’t know what to call this one anymore.
This quilt uses random red, white, and green christmas fabric that I have collected for the past while. I tried to play with color and value with this quilt, and I do like the effect. This quilt is 70 inches by 70 inches, so that makes it a large throw quilt.
I quilted it on my home machine using a free motion swirl, and I love the stability and texture it gives to the finished quilt top. To learn more about this quilt, click here.

This is a fabulous block!!
Great, all these Flying Geese!
What a lovely block design. Thanks for sharing it. I can see it as a snowflake made up in whites and icy blues… but keeping with the geese heading in the same direction theme – how about “heading home’ for an alternate block name?
Absolutely beautiful quilt!
How gorgeous! I love those blocks so much and the fabrics are beautiful!
Lovely! It reminds me of snowflakes…

Mein Gott, this is beautiful! Love the block you designed, love its meaning, love the snowflake-y effect… so inspiring!
Wow this is an amazing Christmas Quilt. I love the design you created. Homeward Bound certainly seems like a perfect name for it too. Still, I’m proud of you for seeking another name given that name is taken. Makes me think of snowflakes or ice crystals/christmas crystals.
I hope you’ll enter this quilt in the upcoming Christmas Quilt Show (http://www.quilting-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/2012-christmas-quilt-show.html)

This is such a wonderful quilt, it has such a nice airy look to it, just like snowflakes. The colors are perfect too! Thanks.
What a lovely Christmas quilt that doesn’t necessarily SCREAM Christmas at you! It will work wonderfully for the entire winter season. Great job!

Love your quilt. I like the mix of green and red you used.
Great job.
I really like how the lighter values almost disappear in the background but are still recognizable by the repeated pattern and the darker values. Great quilt!!!
The blocks in this quilt are gorgeous!
I do NOT need another quilt that HAS to be made…but i think you’ve inspired me to put ANOTHER one of those “necessary” quilts on my list!!! I love this one!
You know what, this quilt looks familiar…I just skipped over to my Pinterest page and I have your quilt pinned from 7 weeks agor.
Needless to say, I love your quilt! It is BEAUTIFUL!!
Haha! That is awesome, and I am honored!

Your quilt is wonderful! It reminds me of beautiful snowflakes. Great winter quilt!
I love it – and I love that you designed the pattern. Awesome job!
It’s a beautiful quilt. Love the colours and the pattern. The quilting looks amazing on it. Congrats
It’s fantastic! And you block is so original. I find it amazing that quilters can still design new quilt blocks – and I think it’s ok to call it whatever you like – that’s how blocks got their name to begin with – and many blocks have more than one name. And thanks for sharing the pattern. You are totally awesome.
Very nice! It looks like red and green snowflakes to me.
What a bright fresh Christmas quilt — a whole lot of piecing and work but what great result. Kudos on a very effective design.

What a fun quilt. It is very Christmassy but not over the top Christmas. Great work. Pinning your quilt for future reference.
Love the clear bright colors and your quilting is great!
Great quilt! I like how it is a Christmas quilt, but it doesn’t scream Christmas so much that you feel like you have to put it away on Dec. 26!
